As with these Hasselback Apples (another lazy efficient apple recipe), you don’t even have to peel the apples prior to baking (I didn’t—see why below), or fuss with a pie crust or crumble topping, to create a cozy fall treat that earns high marks.

Enjoy these versatile baked apples for dessert (mmm, ice cream), breakfast (yogurt and granola, please), or even a side dish (they pair fantastically with pork).

Since the crust/crumble is typically the most indulgent aspect of an apple dessert, these baked apple slices have fewer calories than their traditional counterparts.

To further lighten things up, instead of making these baked apple slices with brown sugar, I naturally sweetened them with honey (you can also use pure maple syrup).

Cinnamon Baked Apples

Simply use 1/4 cup of water for a water saute instead of butter or oils. Your cinnamon apples will still be great and extra healthy too!

Absolutely! You can swap the cornstarch for arrowroot, another thickening agent. Also, you can simply omit the cornstarch all together, while adding half the amount of water called for. You won’t have the thick syrup, but your cinnamon apples will still be delicious with a little juice. Alternately, omit the water all together for a dryer cinnamon apples recipe.

Pair homemade cinnamon apples as a side topped on a bowl of cinnamon oatmeal, waffles, pancakes or french toast. It’s also great eaten as is all by itself!

Baked Cinnamon Apples (healthy + Easy)

Store leftover sauteed apples in the refrigerator for up to 5 – 6 days in a covered container. Reheat apples on the stovetop over low heat, stirring frequently, until warmed through. You may like to add a little water to loosen up the apple mixture. Alternatively, warm in the microwave using 30 – 60 second intervals, stirring between each, until warm.

Add spices: To the apples, add the sugar, cinnamon, vanilla and water mixture, and stir to combine. Continue cooking at a gentle boil for 2 – 3 minutes, stirring occasionally, until apples are fork tender. Let cool a few minutes before serving.

Serve: Pair with non-dairy ice cream or serve topped on cinnamon oatmeal, waffles, french toast or pancakes. Or simply enjoy as is!

Store: Leftovers can be kept in an airtight container for up to 5 – 6 days. You can also freeze for up to 2 months.

Healthy Baked Apples • The Healthy Toast

Use your favorite apples. I love a mix of sweet and tart, so I used 2 Granny Smiths and 2 Fuji apples. Feel free to use all one color. If using all Granny Smiths, you may consider adding 1 more tablespoon of sugar.

If you don’t have arrowroot or cornstarch on hand, you can still prepare these apples by omitting them. It just will not have the syrup, but will still be delicious!

It’s ok if your apples get a little brown while you’re preparing them – it won’t affect the taste. However, if you want to prevent this you can squeeze a little lemon juice on top of them.

Healthy Apple Recipes To Cook With Kids

You also can cut these apples in half down the stem-line and core them that way. They will cook a little bit quicker. Either way will work!

You also can peel the apples if you prefer not to eat the skin. We actually like the skin and the added nutrition it gives!

If you prefer sweeter apples, Cortland or Fuji are a good choice. For a more tart applesauce Braeburn, McIntosh are a better choice.

Spices: I sometimes will add even more cinnamon to this recipe. You can add more cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, or any spices you choose!

Paleo: You can make this recipe paleo by skipping the oats and doubling up on the pecans. It is less ‘filling’ but will be equally as delicious!

Serving: I like to serve these with vanilla ice cream, but they’re delicious on their own! You can also serve them with vanilla or plain greek yogurt.

Can you freeze these baked apples? I wouldn’t recommend freezing these baked apples. You can bake this ahead of time + then reheat them though! They’re best when eaten fresh out of the oven with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Baked apples take about 30 minutes to cook in the oven when cooked whole. If they’re sliced they should soften within 15-20 minutes in the oven.
